Windows 11 Just Got a "Console Mode" for Gamers: Meet the Full Screen Experience

If you are a PC gamer who loves the simplicity of a console or uses a handheld device, Microsoft has just released a feature you are going to love. It’s called the Full Screen Experience, and it essentially creates a whole new desktop environment dedicated entirely to gaming.

Currently rolling out to Windows and Xbox Insiders, this feature transforms your Windows 11 PC into a focused gaming machine.

What is the Full Screen Experience?

Think of this as a "Game Mode" on steroids. When you enter this mode, Windows loads a specialized interface designed for controller navigation, similar to what you see on an Xbox. It strips away the standard Windows desktop distractions, giving you a launcher that puts your games front and center.

While it started as a feature exclusive to Windows handheld devices, it is now expanding to desktops, laptops, and tablets.

Why You Should Try It

Based on early testing, here is why this feature is a big deal for gamers:

  • Optimized Performance: This isn't just a visual skin. Microsoft recommends restarting your PC to enter this mode, which optimizes Windows by running fewer background processes and dedicating more resources to your games.

  • Controller-First Design: If you prefer playing with a controller, you can navigate your entire library and launch games without ever touching a mouse or keyboard.

  • Zero Distractions: It creates a dedicated space where notifications and desktop clutter won’t pull you out of the immersion.

How It Works

Once you have access, you will effectively have two "desktops" living on one PC: your standard Windows desktop for work and the Full Screen Experience for play.

  • Switching Modes: You can switch between the Windows desktop and the gaming interface instantly using the Task View (Win + Tab) or the Game Bar.

  • Startup Option: You can even set your PC to boot directly into this gaming mode, making your PC feel exactly like a console from the moment you turn it on.

How to Get It

Right now, this feature is in Preview and rolling out gradually. To try it, you need to be enrolled in:

  1. Windows Insider Program (Dev or Beta Channel).

  2. Xbox Insider Program.

Once you have the update, you can enable it by going to Settings > Gaming > Full screen experience or by pressing Win + F11.

The Future of PC Gaming?

Currently, the "home app" for this experience is the Xbox app, but the settings menu hints that third-party launchers (like Steam) might be able to take over this role in the future. This could open the door for a fully customizable, console-like PC experience tailored to your favorite platform.
