Microsoft Begins Work on Windows 11 26H1 – Here’s What to Know

Microsoft has officially kicked off development for the next major version of Windows 11 — version 26H1. The new Insider Preview Build 28000, released in the Canary Channel, marks the beginning of this next chapter. But before you get too excited, there are some key things to know about this release.

What Is Windows 11 26H1?

The 26H1 build is not your typical feature update. Unlike the 25H2 version that most users are currently on, this release is focused primarily on platform-level changes designed to support new silicon (processors), particularly those from Qualcomm and NVIDIA.

In simpler terms, this version is built to work with the next generation of ARM-based Windows devices, possibly branded as Windows Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft has made it clear that 26H1 will not be released to existing Windows 11 PCs — at least not as a regular update.

Why Jump to H1?

Until now, Windows 11 has only received one major update per year, such as 21H2, 22H2, 23H2, 24H2, and 25H2. The appearance of an “H1” version marks a shift in naming, but not necessarily in release strategy. Microsoft still plans to stick with one major feature update per year.

The 26H1 version will act more like a special release, preparing Windows for future devices rather than introducing new features for everyone.

What’s New in Build 28000?

So far, there are no visible feature changes in this build. The interface and installation process look the same as before. Microsoft mentions that the build contains core platform updates to enable new hardware support, but most users won’t notice any differences.

Who Can Try It?

If you’re curious, you can still test Windows 11 26H1 through the Windows Insider Program (Canary Channel). However, since this channel is meant for early experimental builds, expect bugs and stability issues.

When Will It Be Released?

Microsoft plans to roll out 26H1 in early 2026, primarily alongside new ARM-powered Windows devices. Regular users will likely skip this update and move directly to Windows 11 version 26H2, which is expected to include the usual feature improvements and enhancements.

Final Thoughts

Windows 11 version 26H1 isn’t a feature-packed release — it’s a hardware-focused update aimed at the next generation of Windows PCs. For now, regular users don’t need to worry about missing out. All major updates and features will continue arriving in the standard annual H2 releases.

If you’re a Windows enthusiast or developer, you can try Build 28000 today via the Canary Channel. Otherwise, sit tight for the more stable 26H2 update expected later in 2026.
