Google App for Windows: Everything You Need to Know
Yes, it’s finally happening! Google has officially released its Google App for Windows. Until now, the Google app was only available on mobile devices, but now desktop users can also try it out. Currently, it’s in an experimental phase and is only available in the United States, but a wider rollout is expected in the future.
What is the Google App for Windows?
The Google app is more than just a search bar. On Windows, it lets you:
-
Perform Google searches without opening a browser.
-
Use AI-powered search features.
-
Search your local files and programs on your PC (like Windows Search, but faster).
-
Access and search your Google Drive files.
-
Use Google Lens to take screenshots and search visually.
In short, it’s like having all-in-one search for your PC and the web.
Key Features
-
Fast local search: Quickly find apps, documents, and files on your computer.
-
AI search mode: Get smarter results with AI-powered answers.
-
Built-in web search: Search the internet directly within the app.
-
Google Lens: Take screenshots and let Google find information related to them.
-
Custom shortcuts: By default, the app launches with
Alt + Space
, but you can change it. -
Theme options: Switch between light and dark themes.
How to Get It
For now, the Google app is available only in the US. If you’re in the US:
-
Go to labs.google.com.
-
Enable the experimental feature.
-
Download the installer and install it like any other program.
-
Sign in with your Google account to start using it.
Once installed, you’ll see the Google app icon on your desktop.
Things to Keep in Mind
-
Since it’s still in beta, you may encounter bugs, glitches, or missing features.
-
Features like Gemini (Google’s AI assistant) are not yet available but are likely to be added in the future.
Final Thoughts
The Google App for Windows has the potential to replace Windows Search for many users thanks to its speed and integration with Google services. While it’s still experimental, it already looks promising. If you’re in the US, it’s worth giving it a try. For everyone else, stay tuned—Google will likely expand availability soon.
