ChatGPT AI Models Are Now Open Source – GPT-OSS

ChatGPT is one of the most popular AI assistants in the world, and now it's taking a big step forward—it's going open source. Well, not the entire ChatGPT service, but the AI models behind it.

Recently, OpenAI (the creator of ChatGPT) introduced something called GPT-OSS, which stands for "Open Source Series". These are open versions of the GPT models that power ChatGPT. That means anyone can now access, modify, and even build their own AI apps using these models.

Even better, you can run these models locally on your own computer. There are different ways to do this, and one of the easiest is using a tool called Ollama, available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

You will need a powerful computer, though. For example, one of the models (called gpt-oss-20b) is about 12 GB in size and takes some time to respond—about 16 seconds for a simple reply. So don’t try this on a low-end PC!

You can also test these models online through demo websites to see how they work without installing anything.

This move by OpenAI is a big deal. For a long time, people joked that "OpenAI" wasn’t really open. But now, with GPT-OSS, they are finally living up to their name. This change could lead to more apps, tools, and services built on top of these powerful AI models.
