Meet Asyar: The Free & Open-Source Raycast Alternative for Mac, Windows, and Linux

If you use a Mac, chances are you’ve heard of Raycast or Alfred. They are super-popular launcher apps that let you search files, trigger shortcuts, manage your clipboard, and interact with AI without ever taking your hands off the keyboard.

However, many of Raycast’s best features—especially advanced AI—are locked behind monthly subscriptions. On top of that, Linux users were completely left out in the cold.

Enter Asyar (https://asyar.org/)—a brand-new, fast, open-source productivity launcher designed for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Its tagline says it all:

"The power of Raycast. The speed of Alfred. Privacy by design."

Here is a breakdown of what Asyar is, what it can do, and why it might become your next go-to productivity tool.

What is Asyar?

Asyar is a keyboard-first command center for your desktop. Built with Rust and Tauri, it is lightweight, snappy, and local-first.

Unlike proprietary subscription software, Asyar is 100% free and open-source. There are no accounts to create, no cloud tracking, and no hidden paywalls.

Standout Features

1. Instant App & File Launcher

With a simple hotkey (like Alt + Space or Ctrl + Space), Asyar pops up on your screen. You can instantly open applications, search through system files, and run commands with fuzzy matching that learns your most-used apps over time.

2. Built-in AI (Bring Your Own Key)

Instead of forcing you into a monthly AI subscription, Asyar uses a Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) model. You can connect your own API keys from:

  • OpenAI (ChatGPT)

  • Anthropic (Claude)

  • Google Gemini

  • OpenRouter (for free or pay-per-token models)

  • Ollama (for running 100% local, offline AI models)

Once connected, pressing Tab inside the launcher lets you ask questions, do math, or run complex AI prompts directly.

3. "Silent" AI Text Transformations

One of Asyar's coolest features is in-place text transformation:

  1. Select any text in any application (e.g., a messy draft or foreign language sentence).

  2. Press a dedicated global hotkey (like Ctrl + Shift + Space).

  3. Asyar rewrites, formats, translates, or fixes the grammar of that text directly where it sits—no window pops up, and no copy-pasting is required!

4. Portals (Smart Web Search)

Portals turn any website into a quick-command search. For example, you can type search github followed by your query, and Asyar jumps straight to GitHub's search results in your browser. You can set up portals for YouTube, Google, documentation sites, or any custom URL.

5. Clipboard History & Text Snippets

  • Clipboard History: Type clip to view and reuse items you previously copied.

  • Text Snippets: Create short keywords that automatically expand into long blocks of text (like your address, email signature, or code templates).

6. Window Management

No need for extra window-snapping utilities. Asyar includes 17 built-in layout presets to snap and resize windows into halves, thirds, quarters, or full-screen using keyboard shortcuts.

7. Community Extensions

Just like Raycast, Asyar supports extensions. You can customize themes, install community-built plugins, and connect external tool protocols (MCP servers) to extend what your launcher can do.

Current State: What You Need to Know

Asyar is currently in Beta. Here are a few practical takeaways from hands-on testing:

  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: It works on macOS, Windows, and Linux.

  • Linux / Wayland Note: If you are running Linux on Wayland, you might encounter a few minor bugs or permission quirks during the setup process as developer support continues to improve.

  • Smooth on Windows & Mac: Windows and macOS offer the smoothest experience right out of the box.

  • Easy Migration: If you are transitioning from Raycast, Asyar allows you to import your existing Raycast settings and backups directly during onboarding!

How to Get Started

  1. Visit asyar.org and download the installer for your operating system.

  2. Run through the quick 2-minute onboarding tour.

  3. Set your preferred activation hotkey (e.g., Ctrl + Space or Alt + Space).

  4. (Optional) Plug in an API key for your favorite AI model.

  5. Enjoy a faster, private workflow!

If you’ve been looking for a lightweight, privacy-respecting alternative to Raycast or Alfred that runs natively across all major platforms, Asyar is well worth testing out. While it is still in active development, its feature set, open-source nature, and zero-subscription model make it one of the most exciting productivity tools around.
