AnduinOS 2.0: Is This the Ultimate Linux Distro for Windows Migrators?

If you have been thinking about ditching Windows for Linux, you know that finding the right distribution ("distro") can be a journey. My goal has been straightforward: find a Linux-based operating system capable enough to replace Windows on my main computer.

So far, I’ve put several popular distros through their paces:

  • Ubuntu: 7/10

  • CachyOS: 8/10

  • Linux Mint: 7.5/10

While Linux Mint was solid, a recent update involving VirtualBox kernel drivers resulted in a dreaded kernel panic. Experiences like that reinforced my rule for this challenge: I'll rate the OS after I daily drive it and no virtual machines. I am dual-booting and testing these operating systems directly on real hardware to see how they perform in everyday use.

Today, we are looking at AnduinOS 2.0.

What is AnduinOS 2.0?

Created by a Microsoft employee, AnduinOS is a custom Ubuntu-based Linux distribution built to provide a familiar transition for Windows users.

It takes the core stability of Ubuntu but strips away many of the common complaints users have with vanilla Ubuntu—such as the heavy reliance on Snap packages and the default desktop layout.

Key Details at a Glance:

  • Base: Ubuntu core (minus Snap overhead)

  • Kernel: Modern Linux Kernel 7.x series

  • Target Audience: Anyone looking for a hassle-free transition from Windows 10 or 11 to Linux.

First Impressions & Design

When booting into the live environment, the first thing that hits you is the design. It looks remarkably like Windows 11:

  • Centered taskbar and Start Menu at the bottom.

  • Familiar system icons in the tray area.

  • Windows-style wallpaper aesthetics.

Underneath the hood, AnduinOS uses the GNOME desktop environment modified with popular extensions like Arc Menu, Dash to Panel, and Network Stats.

Useful Out-of-the-Box Settings

  • Dark Mode: Enabled by default.

  • Mouse Acceleration: Turned off by default (a nice touch for gamers and precision work).

An AnduinOS Appearance tool allows you to tweak the interface easily. If you prefer the Windows 10 layout, you can switch to it with a single click, adjust panel positions, or toggle desktop widgets like download/upload network stats.

Tweak & Setup: Making It Feel at Home

While AnduinOS comes ready to use out of the box, a few quick additions can polish the experience:

  1. Mission Center (Task Manager): The default system monitor felt a bit basic. Installing Mission Center gives you an interface almost identical to the Windows Task Manager, making performance monitoring intuitive.

  2. AI-Powered Terminal Assistance: Using an AI command-line assistant like OpenCode, you can configure terminal shortcuts in seconds—such as automatically running fastfetch to display system details whenever a new terminal window opens.

Real-World Performance: Apps, Editing, and Gaming

A daily-driver operating system needs to handle creative workloads and entertainment. Here is how AnduinOS handled real tasks:

1. Video Editing with DaVinci Resolve

Getting heavy-duty creative software like DaVinci Resolve Studio up and running on Linux can sometimes be tricky. With the help of AI command-line tool, installation was successful, and the app opened cleanly.

However, during timeline previews, a GPU memory error popped up ("GPU memory is full") with no video preview or audio playback—an issue that didn't occur during testing on standard Ubuntu. This highlights one of the realities of Linux: custom distros sometimes require extra manual driver configuration for heavy workstation software.

2. Gaming: Minecraft Bedrock Edition

While Minecraft Java Edition runs on almost anything, playing Minecraft Bedrock Edition natively on Linux has historically been tricky.

Using the Bedrock on Linux wrapper (.deb package running via compatibility layers):

  • Account sign-in via Microsoft worked seamlessly.

  • Full-screen mode (F11) performed smoothly.

  • Gameplay was responsive and stable on real hardware.

Early Verdict

AnduinOS 2.0 succeeds at its core objective: delivering an approachable, sleek, and highly usable desktop environment for anyone intimidated by switching to Linux.

  • Incredibly easy layout for Windows veterans.

  • Clean Ubuntu base without Snap clutter.

  • Great out-of-the-box system defaults (Dark mode, turned-off mouse acceleration).

  • Flexible layout customization (Windows 11 or Windows 10 styles).

Cons:

  • May require manual troubleshooting for specialized graphics drivers (e.g., DaVinci Resolve GPU issues).

UPDATE ON DaVinci Resolve GPU issue : It was due to iGPU, for some reason it was using iGPU instead of dedicated Nvidia GPU, so I turned of the iGPU from BIOS and now DaVinci Resolve works perfectly, but still Ubuntu was able to do it without me disabling the iGPU.
