Microsoft Releases "Xbox Mode" for All PCs: Here’s How to Get It
If you’ve ever looked at a Windows handheld like the ROG Ally or Steam Deck and wished your desktop PC had that same streamlined, console-like interface, you’re in luck.
Microsoft recently released the KB5083631 update for Windows 11, which fully integrates "Xbox Mode" (also known as Console Mode) for all compatible PCs.
Here is everything you need to know about what it is, how to get it, and how it can help your gaming performance.
What is Xbox Mode?
Xbox Mode is a new interface for Windows 11 designed specifically for gamers. It replaces the traditional desktop experience with a "controller-first" UI that looks and feels just like an Xbox console.
When you enter this mode, your PC simplifies its operations. It focuses all its energy on your games by pausing unnecessary background processes, leading to a more stable system and a potential performance boost.
How to Get Xbox Mode
Before you can use it, you need to make sure your system is ready.
-
Update Windows 11: Go to Settings > Windows Update and click Check for updates.
-
Toggle the "Latest Updates" Switch: Ensure the option "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available" is turned ON.
-
Check the Microsoft Store: If the option doesn't appear after a Windows update, open the Microsoft Store, go to your library, and make sure all Xbox-related apps and components are fully updated.
Note: Microsoft is rolling this out in phases. If you don't see it immediately, you may need to wait a day or two for it to automatically appear on your system.
How to Enable and Enter Xbox Mode
Once your system is updated, follow these steps to turn it on:
-
Open Settings and go to the Gaming section.
-
Look for the new Xbox Mode menu.
-
Switch the toggle to On. You can also enable "Show Xbox Mode in Task View" for easier access.
How to Launch the Mode
There are three easy ways to enter the console interface:
-
Task View: Click the Task View button on your taskbar and select "Xbox Mode."
-
Game Bar: Press
Windows + Gand select settings icon and here select Enter Xbox Mode. -
Xbox App: Open the Xbox app and click the "Xbox Mode" button at the top right.
What Happens When You're in Xbox Mode?
1. Console UI
The interface becomes completely full-screen. There is no taskbar or desktop icons. Everything is designed to be navigated with a controller, though you can still use your mouse and keyboard (arrow keys work great for navigation).
2. Automatic Full-Screen
Any game or app you launch while in Xbox Mode will automatically open in a dedicated full-screen environment to keep you immersed in the game.
3. Performance Optimization
This is the "Game Booster" side of the feature. Xbox Mode tells Windows to "hush" the background tasks. It pauses or terminates non-essential Microsoft system services. While it won't magically double your FPS, it provides a much more stable experience by preventing background tasks from causing stutters or lag spikes.
How to Exit
If you need to get back to your regular desktop, simply click Exit Xbox Mode at the top right of the screen, or press the Windows Key to bring up the menu and switch back to the "Windows Desktop" view.
Final Thoughts
Xbox Mode is Microsoft's official game optimizer. It’s perfect for those who connect their PC to a TV or anyone who wants a distraction-free gaming session. Give it a try, update your Windows, and see if the console life is right for your PC!
