kil0bit System Monitor v3: The Best System Stats Taskbar Overlay for Windows

If you’re a power user or just someone who likes to keep an eye on how their computer is performing, you know that many system monitors can be bulky, resource-heavy, or cluttered.

That’s why I created kil0bit System Monitor—a project born out of my own daily needs and built to be as lightweight and stable as possible.

What is Kilobit System Monitor?

kil0bit System Monitor is a free, open-source tool that provides a real-time overlay on your Windows taskbar (or anywhere on your desktop) to track your system's vitals. It allows you to see exactly what’s happening under the hood without needing to open the heavy Windows Task Manager every five minutes.

What can you monitor?

  • Network Speeds: Real-time upload and download speeds.

  • CPU & RAM: Percentage of usage for your processor and memory.

  • GPU Stats: Usage percentage and temperature.

  • Storage: Read and write speeds for your C: drive (and other drives).

What’s New in Version 3?

The latest update is a massive overhaul. Previously, the app was around 90 megabytes. By switching from WinUI 3 to WPF, I managed to shrink the application down to just 2.71 MB. It’s faster, more stable, and barely touches your system resources.

New Features & Customization:

  • Display Modes: Choose between Text (full labels) or Compact (single-character identifiers like 'C' for CPU, 'R' for RAM) to save space.

  • The "Capsule" Look: You can now enable capsules (boxes around each metric) or a unified background palette to match your aesthetic.

  • Task Manager Shortcut: A simple double-click on the overlay now instantly opens the Windows Task Manager.

  • Smart Visibility: You can set the overlay to "Snap to Taskbar" or let it float. You can also toggle "Hide in Full Screen" so it doesn't distract you while gaming or watching movies.

Safety and Installation

Because this is a free, open-source project, the software is not digitally signed. Digital signatures cost a significant amount of money that I, as an independent developer, simply don't have right now.

When you download the .exe, your browser or Windows SmartScreen might flag it as "uncommonly downloaded" or "untrusted." Don't worry—the project is completely open-source on GitHub, meaning anyone can inspect the code. You can also run a scan on VirusTotal for your own peace of mind.

Steps to Install:

  1. Download the latest release from GitHub.

  2. If prompted by your browser, click the three dots and select "Keep" > "Keep anyway."

  3. Run the installer (it takes about a second!).

  4. Note: You will need the .NET Desktop Runtime 8 installed. If you don't have it, the app will provide a link to the official Microsoft website to download it.

A Note on CPU Temp and FPS

Two of the most requested features are CPU temperature and an FPS counter. Currently, these are not included.

To access CPU temperature or FPS, an app usually needs Admin/Kernel-level drivers. To keep Kilobit System Monitor 100% safe and simple, it runs at the "User Level"—meaning it never asks for admin permissions and simply pulls data that Windows is already providing. This keeps your system secure and the app lightweight.

Get Started
