Is Your PC Slowing Down? Here is How to Make it Run Like New Again

Have you ever wondered what happens if you just... stop cleaning up your computer? We’ve all been there. You get busy, you install new apps, and eventually, that snappy "new PC" feeling starts to fade.

In a recent experiment, I went months without running any system cleanup tools. By mid-April 2026, the cracks were starting to show. Web browsers were freezing, and launching apps took longer than usual. If your PC is starting to feel a bit sluggish, here is what I learned and how you can fix it.

It’s Not Always Just "Junk Files"

Before you start deleting files, check your BIOS and Hardware Drivers.

I was running an MSI motherboard with a BIOS version from 2019. After updating to the latest version—which included proper support for Windows 11 and updated CPU microcode—my system started running "like butter" again, even before I ran a cleanup tool. Sometimes, hardware stability is just as important as software maintenance.

Beyond the BIOS, keeping your drivers updated is crucial:

  • GPU Drivers: Essential for gamers and video editors to prevent crashes and improve frame rates.

  • Chipset Drivers: Helps your processor communicate efficiently with other hardware.

  • Network Drivers: Can solve "ghost" connectivity issues or slow Wi-Fi speeds.

The "Developer" Mess

If you are a power user or a programmer, your system gets cluttered faster than most. Between Node.js, C#, Rust, and Visual Studio, my PC was full of temporary "garbage" files that I didn’t even know existed. Even if you aren't a developer, things like video editors (like CapCut) and browsers can easily rack up gigabytes of cache files that sit there doing nothing.

The Solution: Microsoft PC Manager

There are thousands of cleanup tools out there, but many are "bloatware" themselves. The tool I personally recommend and use is Microsoft PC Manager.

It is the official system cleanup tool for Windows, and it is arguably one of the best apps Microsoft has ever made. It’s clean, simple, and actually effective.

Key Features to Use:

  • Health Check: A quick overview that recommends basic optimizations.

  • Deep Cleanup: This is the heavy lifter. In my case, it found over 15GB of storage that could be freed up (excluding the recycle bin!). It targets system logs, prefetch files, and third-party app caches like Chrome and Nvidia.

  • Large File Finder: Easily find those massive files you forgot were taking up space.

  • App Management: It helps you manage background apps and startup items to speed up your boot time.

Other Great Alternatives

If you prefer open-source software, Bleachbit is another fantastic choice. It is free, transparent, and available for both Windows and Linux users.
