How to Install Windows 11 Faster by Skipping the Update Screen

We’ve all been there: you’re excited to set up a fresh installation of Windows 11, only to be stopped in your tracks by a screen that says "Downloading Windows updates."

If your internet is slow, this can turn a quick setup into an all-day event. While there is a progress bar, Microsoft doesn't provide any information on how long it will take or how big the update actually is. You’re just stuck waiting and wondering.

But there is good news! Microsoft has recently updated the Windows installer with a small but life-saving feature. Here is how you can get to your desktop much faster.

The New "Update Later" Option

In the past, the "Checking for updates" phase was often mandatory and unavoidable. However, the latest Windows 11 installers now include a hidden gem: the Update Later button.

How it Works:

  1. Start Setup as Usual: Go through the initial steps (language, keyboard layout, etc.) just like you normally would.

  2. Reach the Update Screen: When you get to the point where it says "Checking for Windows updates," look at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Click "Update Later": Instead of waiting for the download to finish, click this new option.

  4. Confirm: A second screen may pop up asking if you’re sure. Simply click "Update later" again to skip the process.

Why This is a Game Changer

By skipping the updates during the initial installation, you can reach your desktop in record time—sometimes in as little as 8 minutes.

Once you are on your desktop, you can:

  • Multitask: You can start changing your settings, downloading your favorite browser, or organizing your files while the system updates in the background.

  • Control the Timing: You can go to the Windows Update settings and start the updates manually when it’s convenient for you.

  • Accessibility: Your desktop is fully accessible even if the background updates take a long time. You aren't "locked out" of your own computer.

A Small Suggestion for Microsoft

While this is a great change, it could be even better. Currently, the system still "checks" for updates before giving you the option to skip them. It would be even faster if Microsoft provided a "Check for updates now or later?" prompt at the very beginning of the installation process.

Final Thoughts

If you are using an old ISO file or have a slow internet connection, don't let the update screen hold you hostage. Look for that Update Later button to get your system up and running immediately.
