Windows 11 now offers greater user control in the EU

Have you heard about the Digital Markets Act (DMA)? It's a new European regulation that's bringing some big changes to how Windows 11 works, especially for users in European countries. The best part? It's all about giving you more freedom and control over your PC!

MS Store Uninstall option

What's Changing with DMA?

The DMA is making almost all pre-installed Windows 11 applications optional. This means you can finally uninstall apps you don't use, including some that were previously "stuck" on your system like Microsoft Edge, Bing Search and now even Microsoft Store.

Here are some key highlights:

  • Microsoft Store is Optional: Yes, you read that right! If you're in a country where DMA applies, you'll be able to uninstall the Microsoft Store. Even if you uninstall it, your apps will still receive updates to keep them secure and up-to-date.

  • Install Apps Without the Store: You'll be able to download and install Microsoft Store applications directly from the Microsoft Store website without needing the Store app itself.

  • Browser Freedom (Goodbye Forced Edge!): This is a big one! Windows search and other Microsoft apps will now open links in your default browser, whatever it may be. You won't be prompted or forced to install Microsoft Edge if you prefer another browser.

Why This Matters

This shift is all about giving users more choice and preventing large companies from limiting your options. It's a move towards a more open and user-centric experience, allowing you to truly customize your Windows 11 system.

What if DMA Doesn't Apply to Me?

If you don't live in a European country where the DMA applies, you might still feel a bit limited. However, there are tools like "Wintoys" (available from the Microsoft Store) that can help you optimize your Windows 11 settings and even enable some DMA-like features on your PC. The "Digital Markets Act" option within Wintoys' system tweaks section offers more freedom regarding digital products.
