Windows 10 Support Extended: How to Get Free Updates

Hey Windows 10 users! If you're not quite ready to make the jump to Windows 11, we've got some important news for you. As you might know, official support for Windows 10 is ending soon, specifically on October 14, 2025. But don't worry, Microsoft is offering ways to keep your PC secure even after that date!

Extended Security Updates (ESU) Program

Microsoft understands that upgrading right away isn't always possible, so they're offering an Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for Windows 10. This program provides monthly critical and important security updates to help keep your PC protected during the transition.

For the first time ever, individual users can enroll in this program! Previously, it was mostly for businesses. And the best part? There are ways to get these updates for free for one extra year, until October 13, 2026!

How to Get Free Extended Security Updates

Microsoft is making it surprisingly easy to get these free updates. Here are the main ways for personal devices:

  1. Use Windows Backup: Simply use the built-in Windows Backup feature to sync your settings to the cloud. This is a simple, no-cost way to enroll.

  2. Redeem Microsoft Rewards Points: If you have 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, you can redeem them to get the ESU program for free. This is another easy and free option!

You'll get an option in Windows Updates or through a notification to enroll your device once this becomes available. The enrollment wizard will guide you through the simple steps.

Why is This Important?

After October 14, 2025, if you don't enroll in the ESU program, your Windows 10 PC will no longer receive regular security and feature updates. This makes your computer more vulnerable to cyber threats like malware and viruses. It also means some applications might not work as well.

What About Windows 11?

While the ESU program provides a great bridge, Microsoft still encourages users to upgrade to Windows 11 when they can. Windows 11 offers enhanced security features, a faster and more efficient experience, and new AI capabilities like Copilot. Microsoft has seen a significant drop in security incidents on Windows 11 PCs.

If you're interested in learning more about staying secure with Windows, Copilot+ PCs, and Windows 365, you can read the official blog post from Microsoft here: Stay secure with Windows 11, Copilot+ PCs and Windows 365 before support ends for Windows 10.

So, if you're holding onto Windows 10 for a little longer, take advantage of these free options to stay secure! It gives you more time to decide when the upgrade to Windows 11 or a new device is right for you.
