Best Operating Systems to Try After Windows 10 Reaches End of Life

As Microsoft prepares to end support for Windows 10 in late 2025, users may find themselves wondering what to do next. While upgrading to Windows 11 is a popular choice, it's not the only option. Here are some great operating systems you can try—whether you're looking for something lightweight for an older device or just want to explore new digital horizons.

Chromium OS

Chromium OS is a notable option, particularly for users who primarily utilize web-based applications. Several variations are available:

  • FydeOS: FydeOS is a lightweight operating system based on the open-source Chromium OS project. It utilizes the Linux kernel and integrates browser platforms with container technology, offering a user experience similar to Google's Chrome OS.

  • Chrome OS Flex: Google's official version, designed for installation on older PCs and Macs.

  • Brunch: This project enables the installation of the official Chrome OS, including Android application support, which is not a feature of Chrome OS Flex.

For those interested in experiencing Chrome OS, FydeOS can be tested in a virtual machine environment. Chrome OS is recognized for its speed and compatibility with web applications and Android functionality.

Linux (Ubuntu)

Linux represents a popular alternative to Windows. A multitude of distributions are available; however, Ubuntu is recommended, especially for new users. It provides ease of use and a functional out-of-the-box experience. Other Ubuntu-based distributions, such as Linux Mint, are also viable options.

Android OS for PC

Android can also be run on personal computers. Two projects that facilitate this include:

  • Bliss OS: This provides a full Android experience on the PC, suitable for applications and general gaming.

  • Prime OS: This is optimized for Android gaming on the PC, with support for a mouse and keyboard.

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC Edition

For users not inclined to migrate from Windows 10, the IoT Enterprise LTSC edition offers continued support until 2032.

Windows 11

Although some users express hesitancy towards Windows 11 due to its system requirements, it has gained considerable popularity. For those considering an upgrade, a clean installation using a tool such as Rufus is advisable. Rufus facilitates the bypassing of system requirements and the removal of unwanted features during the installation process.
