Microsoft Is Locking Notepad Features Behind a Subscription—Here’s Why It Matters

As a long-time Windows user, I never thought Notepad—one of the simplest Windows apps—would require a subscription. But here we are. Microsoft’s recent changes to Notepad have raised concerns, and I have a few thoughts.

What’s Changing?

Microsoft has added a new AI features to Notepad, but it's locked behind a Microsoft 365 subscription. This changes how we use a tool that has been free for decades.

Why This Is Worrying

Notepad has always been a lightweight, free text editor for quick notes, coding, and opening text files. Putting features behind a paywall raises concerns:

  1. What’s Next? – If Notepad requires a subscription, will other apps such as Photos app follow?

  2. More Bloat – Adding AI and cloud features could make Windows apps slower and if you dont use them they are useless (most of you won't 'cuz it's not free 😅)

Paying for Basic Features?

A text editor shouldn’t require a paid plan. While AI features may justify a subscription, many users will turn to free alternatives like Notepad++ or something else.

Final Thoughts

Microsoft’s move toward monetizing built-in Windows apps is worth watching. Notepad should stay free and lightweight. If this trend continues, Windows users may need to rethink their reliance on default apps—or even Windows itself 😅.
