Why does Windows PC slow down over time with an SSD?

If your Windows PC ever suddenly felt slow, this might be the issue.

There are several reasons why Windows might slow down over time on a PC with an SSD, even though SSDs are generally much faster than traditional hard drives. A PC slowdown can be caused by various factors, such as fragmentation, background processes, junk files, registry issues, malware, viruses, or hardware problems. However, on Windows, fragmentation is often the most common issue, especially when the TRIM command isn't working properly.

The TRIM command tells a solid-state drive (SSD) which data blocks are no longer in use and can be erased. The operating system sends a TRIM command when a file is deleted, marking the blocks as free for reuse. This helps improve performance, extend the lifespan of the SSD, and increase efficiency. While Windows usually handles this process automatically, sometimes the TRIM command doesn't run as it should, which can slow down both the SSD and your PC.

This is an issue I have been facing on Windows for a long time, and I believe it’s something every Windows user should know. So, next time you feel like your PC is slowing down, check if this is the reason.

I have made a video on this topic, so watch the video below for more information on this issue and learn how to identify and fix it.

AS SSD Benchmark is a popular software tool used to measure the performance of Solid-State Drives (SSDs). This is a really useful tool for SSD.
