Mozilla Under Fire for Secret Tracking Feature in Firefox

Mozilla, the non-profit behind the popular Firefox web browser, has faced backlash after it was revealed that a new tracking feature was secretly added to the browser.

The feature in question, called Privacy Preserving Attribution (PPA), was quietly introduced in a recent Firefox update. Designed to provide advertisers with more accurate data without compromising user privacy, PPA has been criticized for its lack of transparency and potential for tracking.

But Mozilla did not adequately inform users about PPA and its implications for their privacy,  The feature was enabled by default, meaning users were not given a choice to opt-in or out. While Mozilla claims PPA is designed to protect user privacy, some experts worry that it could still allow for tracking and profiling of user behavior.

Following a complaint from the privacy non-profit noyb, the Austrian data protection authority is investigating Mozilla's handling of PPA. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for Mozilla's reputation and future development of privacy-focused features. Click Here to read noyb post.
